ComSoc Kenya Chapter Opportunities

To assist in identifying candidates for volunteer positions for 2020 and beyond the IEEE ComSoc Kenya Chapter Executive Committee would like to give you the opportunity to be considered. This is in line with encouraging all members to develop a sense of ownership and participate in the running of the Chapter. This will also help us network and also identify leaders amongst ourselves.

Executive Committee

The general qualifications to be an ExCom Officer (Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer) within the ComSoc Kenya Chapter:

  1. IEEE membership must be current (membership dues must be paid) upon entering office and maintained throughout term of office
  2. Be a Graduate Student Member, Member, Senior Member, or Fellow grade
  3. Should be a member of the IEEE ComSoc and the IEEE Kenya Section.
  4. Willingness to volunteer
RoleRole Description
ChairChair for all meetings of the Chapter and the Chapter ExCom.
Conduct meetings; review and approve all annual reports.
Represent the Chapter at the IEEE Kenya Section Steering Committee.
Assist with the Programs Planning.
Fill positions vacated by moves, outside obligations, etc.
Review and revise the description of duties of the group's officers. (To be done within first month of term as needed.)
Vice ChairAssist the Chair in the coordination of all Chapter activities.
At the request of the Chapter Chair or in the absence of the Chapter Chair, shall chair Chapter or ExCom meetings.
Participate in programs planning.
Manage some major area of Chapter activities such as budget, publicity, programs, membership, arrangements, or student activities.
SecretaryKeep minutes and send meeting reports.
Manage Chapter correspondence.
Participate in programs planning.
Any other duties as are assigned to him/her by the Chair.
TreasurerDevelopment of a Chapter budget for approval by the Section.
Accounting of all Chapter funds.
Keeping financial records.
Submitting a financial record to the Section and Communications Society.
Participate in programs planning.

Committees

The general qualifications to be a Committee Member are:

  1. IEEE membership must be current (membership dues must be paid) upon entering office, and must be maintained throughout term of office
  2. Should be a member of the IEEE ComSoc and the IEEE Kenya Section.
  3. Willingness to volunteer

These qualifications above may be waived if we don’t get a Webmaster within the chapter.

Professional Activities and Events Committee
(5-10 members)
Promote Professional Activities at the pre-university, university and engineering professional levels within the Chapter.
• Promote Professional Activities at the pre-university, university and engineering professional levels within the Chapter.
• To plan and implement conferences, workshops and similar events/meetings that address specific areas of technology that will advance the mission and purposes of IEEE ComSoc.
1. To identify what professional activities the members want and appropriate options for delivery.
2. Organize conferences/events that:
• Provide a venue for engaging public officials and opinion-leaders on technology policy-related issues.
• Serve to advance technologies, especially new and emerging technologies.
• Provide an opportunity to raise awareness and engage IEEE’s technical communities with the public policy
Educational and Student Activities
(3-5 members)
Promote continuing education, professional development and training opportunities for IEEE ComSoc Kenya Chapter members.1. Assist with educational issues and activities at a national/Chapter level, and establishing better contacts with National Societies in educational activities.
2. The development and delivery of continuing education products and activities
3. The coordination of pre-university programs.
4. The recognition of individuals and companies for major contributions to engineering and technical education through the Educational Awards program
5. The representation of the IEEE ComSoc Kenya Chapter in matters regarding Communication fields of engineering education in Kenya.
6. Interface between Student and professional members to promote the value of continued membership in IEEE after graduation.
7. Promote engagement of students and work towards establishing Student branch Chapters.
Industry Engagement Committee
(3-5 members)
• Promote IEEE ComSoc Kenya Chapter as a progressive technical information provider to local industry and its employees
• Promote the role that IEEE plays in developing new technologies
• Work with local industry to understand how IEEE can help address its needs
1. Bridge the gap and enhance relationships between industry, academia and IEEE
2. Influence organizations to support the involvement of their staff in IEEE ComSoc activities
3. Ensure that the ComSoc Kenya Chapter establishes and maintains contacts and links with local industries, national societies and other organizations.
4. Promote seminars and other local events with industry and of industrial relevance.
Awards and Recognition Committee
(3-5 members)
To promote, recognize and reward excellence within the IEEE ComSoc Kenya Chapter.1. Develop, coordinate and implement award and recognition programs and procedures to recognize;
• Individual IEEE ComSoc Kenya Chapter members.
• Support provided by firms, divisions of firms, or individuals, which enable volunteers of the IEEE ComSoc Kenya Chapter to carry out their assignments.
2. Recommend volunteers from Kenya Chapter for Region 8 / Global Awards.
3. Documentation of awards and recognition presented by IEEE ComSoc Kenya Chapter.
4. Publicizing the availability of awards and recognitions; help in preparing nominations and assist in affording appropriate publicity to awardees.
5. Develop budgets in support of the awards programs.
Membership Development Committee
(3-5 members)
• To increase membership in the ComSoc Kenya Chapter on all levels by recruiting new members, retaining current members and recovering members in arrears.
• Increase awareness of the values of IEEE ComSoc membership.
1. Retain, Engage and Develop - Pursue programs and activities, which over the past few years have been of high interest and successful as well as any new activities that members might be interested in.
2. Match interests and needs of local engineers with educational resources that may be available through local university faculty, local technical leaders, or the IEEE.
3. Grow and Attract New Members - determine areas of interest to practicing engineers in local industry to target new members by offering topics and programs they would like to see.
4. Promote and elevate - all the members that are in the “area of transition” of their membership grades.
Publicity and Communication
(3-5 members)
To manage all communication (platforms) to and from members and partners of the Chapter.1. Manage all official IEEE ComSoc Kenya Chapter mailing lists.
2. Produce periodic newsletters to ComSoc Kenya Chapter members.
3. Manage the ComSoc Kenya Chapter website regularly.
4. Manage all social media platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.) regularly.
5. Provide publicity information to Communications Society staff on noteworthy Chapter activities.
